John Fish (behind the water tower) and I decided to visit the site of Birtley Station - only the water tower survived with the exchange sidings that then served the Caterpillar Factory. Still thereabouts, however, was the Station Hotel, the Co-op Tin Plate Works and chimney, Derek Crouchs' workshops and in the far distance the pit-head winding gear of the Ravensworth Ann Colliery where my Grandfather, 'Cappy' Watson, worked his whole adult life! All that came by was an EE Type 3 diesel on a coal train, however. It'a a wonder we took it. We very rarely took pictures of diesels!
